Introduction: Stroke is a central nervous system disorder caused by impaired blood flow to the brain or ruptured blood vessels in the brain. Stroke causes decreased handgrip strength in the older people. Handgrip exercises are a non-pharmacological therapy to stimulate neuromuscular function in the older people.
Methods: The research design used a case study approach. The number of respondents in this study was two (2) participants, with the following inclusion criteria: older adults aged >60 years, living with family, medically diagnosed with stroke at the Community Health Center (Puskesmas RI Sidomulyo, Pekanbaru), and experiencing hand muscle weakness with a muscle strength scale of at least 3. Handgrip exercises were performed twice daily for 3 days through home visits. Data collection used a handgrip dynamometer and Manual Muscle Testing (MMT).
Result: The study showed an increase in handgrip strength using a handgrip dynamometer.
Conclusion: Handgrip exercises can improve handgrip strength in older people stroke survivors. The longer the duration of the exercise, the greater the improvement in handgrip strength in elderly stroke survivors.
